Saturday Market and Walk
On Saturdays, we usually go to the center of town for the big Saturday market. Spread across several squares and several streets, vendors sell everything from underwear to soap, meat to coffee, dog accesories to phone cases. Since the sun is out, the market is well attended. We wait in line to get the last two rabbit thighs and some smoked bacon. People fill up all the café tables and chat over espressos and drinks. And I have to make a stop to visit and catch up with the tablecloth vendor where I always get a batch of tablecloths to bring home.
After purchasing what we need for our supper, and a few tablecloths to boot, we climb the winding road to the top where sits a still working military fort and a beautiful romanesque chapel. The sky is clear and we can see the towns below and the Mediterranean shining beyond. We soak in the sun and the smell of flowering bushes and walk around the old church, admiring the stonework set against the deep blue sky.
We finish the day with a walk out to the island for the sunset. And then, it’s time to cook and eat those rabbit thighs. We wrap them in bacon, stuff in some rosemary picked from the hedge out front, and add some cherry jam and wine. Our meal ends with delicious raspberry and apple tarts from the bakery.
